Art Basel shines a spotlight on Miami every year. The world-famous art fair, which takes place during Miami Art Week (December 2-8, 2019), has turned the city into the cultural capital of the Americas, where a vibrant contemporary art scene mixes with fashion, design, music, food and everything creative in between. This year, a total of 4,000 artists will be represented and 269 gallerists will showcase their top roster of artists, with the perennial convention hosting 20 new exhibitors at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

To shed more light on the premier art week, we turned to the #1 real estate team in Miami, The Jills Zeder Group, to be our guide. Real estate and art have a deeply entwined history, after all. Art is often used to stage, and ultimately sell, high-end properties. The Jills Zeder Group continues to forge new connections between Miami’s art world and the international real estate landscape in which they operate. They have a consistent presence at Art Basel/Miami Art Week each year, whether it’s attending gala openings or parties, or even sponsoring special events in years past.

Below is a conversation with the group, which includes Miami real estate legends Jill Hertzberg, Jill Eber, Judy Zeder, Felise Eber, Danny Hertzberg, Nathan Zeder, Hillary Hertzberg, and Kara Zeder Rosen, and spans three families and two generations.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury When does the luxury real estate “season” really begin in Miami?

The Jills Zeder Group For luxury real estate, the “season” really begins with Art Basel, which is Dec. 5–8 this year. It’s not only the event, but also the weather ― especially the cold weather in the Northeast and Midwest ― that drives buyer traffic to Miami.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Why is Art Basel so important in terms of luxury real estate in Miami?

The Jills Zeder Group Art Basel is the premier global art fair, and as a result, high-net-worth individuals travel to Miami from all over the world. These visitors are not here to just buy art; they are also looking for homes to showcase their art, and enjoy all Miami has to offer.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury How does The Jills Zeder Group leverage Art Basel to gain exposure for its properties?

The Jills Zeder Group The Jills Zeder Group fully understands that people who are coming into town for Art Basel will also be viewing the city. This is an opportunity for them to realize what a dynamic and interesting city Miami is and that it would be a sensational place to live. We showcase our spectacular properties for them to see by using a combined strategy that includes a custom advertising program. We run multi-page spreads in the official Art Basel guide, Indulge Art Basel edition, the Miami Herald, and more. In addition, we run a targeted social media campaign ― “The Art of Selling Real Estate” with the hashtag #BaselwithJillsZeder.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury What are your favorite events during Art Basel?

The Jills Zeder Group We enjoy going to Art Miami, Vernissage, the Bass Museum, Scope, Pulse and Untitled. They all have extraordinary ambiance, a variety of artists and excellent people-watching. Some sit on the sands of Miami Beach and have the ocean as backdrop.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury How can we beat the traffic during Art Basel?

The Jills Zeder Group We suggest using Uber or Lyft, so you have the freedom to come and go, hassle-free. Another fun alternative is to Deco Bike.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury What makes a home a perfect property to showcase art?

The Jills Zeder Group Every home can be a showcase for art. It’s always great to have the walls and high ceilings for paintings. Gardens and a good pool area would be ideal to place sculptures.

Coldwell Banker Global Luxury Where do you predict buyers will be coming from this season?

The Jills Zeder Group There has definitely been an increase in domestic buyers from high-tax states, specifically the Northeast, including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the Midwest, such as Chicago and Minneapolis, and California. We think this will continue as Florida has no state income tax or estate tax. We are also seeing clients moving from Montreal and Toronto.
