Warhol fans will find like minds at The Skateroom at Delano during the week of Art Basel Miami Beach. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Design Store will unveil its first installation and pop-up shop featuring a limited edition series of skate decks with artwork by Andy Warhol, made in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The idea, says Emmanuel Plat, director of merchandising, MoMA Design Store, is to create “an immersive installation throughout the legendary Delano property” and is “a fitting celebration of the artist’s enduring influence.”

The skate decks will be displayed at Delano from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6. This includes a deluxe set of 32 unique decks featuring Andy Warhol’s 32 Campbell’s Soup Cans, a set of eight decks with the pop icon Colored Campbell’s Soup Cans, and triptychs with Gold Marilyn Monroe, Guns, Car Crash, Self Portrait and Detail of the Last Supper. The skate decks will be available for purchase, though in very limited quantities. A percentage of proceeds from the sales will be donated in support of The Skateroom’s non-profit partner, Skateistan, an international NGO initiative that empowers children in third-world countries through skateboarding and education.

“32 Campbell’s Soup Cans and Gold Marilyn Monroe are artworks in MoMA’s collection,” adds Plat. “The quality of the reproduction of the artwork on all the skate decks is exceptional and is sure to excite art enthusiasts.”

We recently caught up with Plat to get the inside scoop on the exclusive art skateboards.

Previews Inside Out Why did you choose to get involved with Art Basel and Skateroom?

Emmanuel Plat Art Basel is the perfect opportunity to launch our new Andy Warhol skateboards, and we think this is the perfect audience, especially based on the success of the other artist skateboards we’ve launched this past year at the MoMA Design Store. Plus, we’re excited that MoMA Design Store will have a presence during Art Basel for the first time.

Previews Inside Out Why did you choose Andy Warhol vs. another artist?

Emmanuel Plat Andy Warhol has a strong connection to MoMA as reflected by his works in the Museum’s collection. As one of the most important artists of the 20th century, we wanted to start with his iconic artwork to launch this collaboration.

Previews Inside Out Michael Dayton Hermann, director of licensing for The Andy Warhol Foundation noted that the installation continues “Warhol’s tradition of collaborating with creative leaders whom challenge convention.” How do you see the installation “challenging convention”?

Emmanuel Plat Andy Warhol’s artwork frequently includes popular imagery, and we’re excited to be able to share that with the Art Basel audience through this launch. Plus, all purchases support The Museum of Modern Art and Skateistan, an international NGO initiative that empowers children in third-world countries through skateboarding and education.

Previews Inside Out What is the cost range of the skate decks? How can someone buy them?

Emmanuel Plat Prices range from a $200 skate deck featuring a pop colored Campbell’s Soup Can to a deluxe set of 32 skateboards featuring Campbell’s Soup Cans, an artwork in MoMA’s collection. They will first launch at Art Basel during our pop-up installation with The Skateroom at Delano South Beach from November 30 to December 5. Also, they will be available for purchase at momastore.org.
