Joseph Gorny-Designed Private Residence in Alamo

Mediterranean architecture has a long, storied history in California. The celebrated architectural style – with its earth-based palette of materials, simple massing of forms, courtyard planning, shady arcades, and integration with the landscape – never seems to lose its luster for Californians in search of living environments that suit both their lifestyle and the local climate. Architect Joseph Gorny thoughtfully applied these inspirations to a custom Alamo estate he designed in 2006 while also reimagining the Mediterranean vernacular with a contemporary twist.

The residence still manages to feel every bit as timeless as it did the day it was built. Adorning the interiors of over 5,700 square feet are marble floors, Venetian plaster walls, soaring ceilings outlined in coffered, arched, and beamed details, and distressed Walnut hardwood floors. These expressions, along with the home's quality materials and craftsmanship, lend to an atmosphere that feels sophisticated and gallery-like. The home's location – on a gated private lane – further elevates the feeling of sanctuary.  Each way you look, there is something to enthrall you: textured walls and ceilings, brass finishes, elegant chandeliers, and custom built-ins. A formal living room, flanked by two sets of French doors, leads to the backyard for effortless entertaining. The breezy dining room also opens to the outdoors, in true California-Mediterranean spirit. Opening from the family room, the gourmet kitchen delights with a butler's pantry/wet bar, three ovens, dual dishwashers, and a vast center island – giving this multi-functional space every imaginable convenience to handle gatherings. Beyond, the backyard, side yard, and courtyard have been transformed into a fluid, magazine-worthy entertaining oasis.  Slate stone embellishments and an attached loggia comprised of a shiplapped ceiling and fan, built-in speakers plus a gas fireplace give the entire area the vibe of an outdoor living room. An executive office, five bedrooms, wine cellar, and unique au pair setup on the lower level with a separate entry complete the home. Luxurious yet relaxed, the residence stands as a true ode to California living. View the complete listing by Jon and Camille Ahern of Coldwell Banker Realty in Danville.
